Medicare

Medicare is a crucial health insurance program that provides essential coverage to help eligible individuals afford necessary medical services, treatments, and medications. It's a cornerstone of healthcare for many older Americans and those with specific disabilities.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily designed for:

  • Seniors aged 65 and older: It provides health coverage for individuals who are 65 years old or older.
  • Certain younger individuals with disabilities: People under 65 who have specific disabilities or qualifying medical conditions may also qualify for Medicare.
  • Individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): Medicare also covers individuals with ESRD (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant) and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

The program is divided into several parts:

  • Medicare Part A: This part covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care services.
  • Medicare Part B: Part B covers certain doctor services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): This is an alternative to traditional Medicare (Part A and Part B). It offers the same coverage as Parts A and B and often includes additional benefits such as vision, dental, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Medicare Part D: This part offers prescription drug coverage. It can be obtained as a standalone plan to work alongside Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan.
